Brihadeeswarar temple or the Periya Koil or the Big Temple in Tanjore turned 1000 years in September 2010. This temple was built in 1010 AD at the Chola capital of Thanjavur under the aegis of Kind Rajaraja Chola.
It is a must visit temple for both pilgrims and lovers of architecture.
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva in the form of a Lingam called Peruvudaiya, Rajarajeshwaramudvya. The inner wall of the garbhagriha or the sanctum sanctorum has sculptures of 108 dance poses called karmas performed by Lord Shiva himself.
